Unboxing Backroad Unsupported

The parcel has been delivered and you want to test your new bike as soon as possible? With the right tools, setting up your Backroad is quick and easy. Here you can find out step by step what you need and how the assembly works.

• Diagonal cutting pliers or scissors
• Hex wrenches (8,6,5,4 mm)
• Star-shaped key (T25)
• Torque wrench with bits (8, 6, 5, 4 mm, T25)
• 15 mm spanner (for pedals without hexagon socket)
• Grease (mounting or bearing grease)
• Carbo paste
• Workstand (optional)

For electronic shifting systems, in addition to the steps described, the battery must be connected or inserted and charged. You can find the relevant tutorials here.

• Open the box and take out the parts. In the manual you will find instructions on the assembly and the required torques.
• Place the bike in a stand or ask someone else to hold it.
• Remove the packaging material. For zip ties, use diagonal cutting pliers or scissors..
• Remove the rubber band from the brake lever. The red pad spacer remains between the brake pads until the wheel is installed.

• Take the seat post clamp out of the package and carefully insert it into the cut-out in the seat tube, with the flat side facing the direction of travel and the screw pointing upward.
• Tip: A paper towel plug in the seat tube prevents the seat post clamp from falling into the seat tube when it is inserted. After inserting it, remove the plug again.
• Take the rubber cover and slide it over the seat post, with the open end facing down.

Note: For frame sizes L and XL, the seat post clamp and rubber cover are already pre-installed.

• Apply some carbon paste to the lower part of the seat post, then insert it into the seat tube. Make sure the rubber cover is properly seated in the cut-out of the seat tube.
• Insert the seat post to the desired height, taking note of the markings for the minimum and maximum insertion depths.
• Lift the bottom part of the rubber cover and secure the seat post with the clamp bolt. Use the torque spanner and set it to 10 Nm. The torque is reached as soon as its head deflects during screwing.
• If you have a workstand, you can now clamp the bike into the stand by the seat post.

• Loosen the stem bolts on the sides, hold the fork firmly with one hand, and rotate the stem until it is aligned straight with the fork. Now tighten the screws slightly.
• Loosen the two lower handlebar clamp bolts (see illustration) and rotate the handlebars upward to their approximate position. It will be aligned later, once the wheel is installed.
• Tighten the handlebar clamp screws on the stem slightly to fix the handlebar.

• Loosen the thru axle with a 6 mm hex wrench, pull it out of the fork and place it within easy reach.
• Pull the red pad spacer out of the brake calliper and keep it for later transport.
• Position the front wheel into the fork from below. The brake disc must sit between the brake pads and the hub between the dropouts of the fork. Be careful not to touch the brake disc with your fingers.
• Reinsert the thru-axle and tighten it loosely.
• Connect the light cable to the hub dynamo and route it upward, keeping it clear of the spokes.
• Tighten the thru axle to 15 Nm.

• Take the bike out of the workstand and place it horizontally on the ground.
• Adjust the angle of the handlebar so that the handlebar plugs are at a 90° angle to the ground. From this starting point, you can adjust it slightly upward to suit your individual needs.
• Tighten the two lower bolts on the handlebar clamp to 5 Nm. Please note: The two top screws must always be fully tightened so that no gap is visible (no-gap mark, 5 Nm).
• Check again to make sure the stem is straight, and then tighten the clamping bolts to 5 Nm.
• Next, align the headlight in the direction of travel and tighten the T25 star-shaped key to 4–5 Nm.

• Check the markings on the pedal sides (usually stamped with "L" and "R"), pick up the left pedal, and apply a little grease to the pedal thread.
• Insert a suitable Allen key (6 or 8 mm) through the crank arm from the back, place it on the pedal axle, and tighten the pedal clockwise.
• Repeat this process with the right pedal. Note that the right pedal is screwed in anti-clockwise.
• Tighten both pedals to 35 Nm. Use the switch function on the torque wrench for this.
• Note: Some pedals only have a mount for 15 mm spanners. Since it is attached to the outside of the crank, the angle of view relative to the direction of insertion changes each time.
