How to adjust your saddle height correctly

With just a few simple steps, you can adjust your saddle to the optimal height to ride comfortably and efficiently.

1. What you need

  • Hex wrench for the saddle clamp (4–5 mm)
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Your cycling shoes (flats) or cycling shoes with cleats (clipless pedals)

1. Preparation

  • Put on the shoes you'll be riding in (with cleats attached, if you're using clipless pedals).
  • Park the bike securely in a stand or lean it against a stable surface.
  • Adjust the crank so that the pedal you want to measure is at the 6 o'clock position.

2. Initial setup

  • Sit on the saddle and place your heel on the pedal at the 6 o'clock position.
  • Straighten your leg completely without letting your hips tilt.
  • When the leg is straight: The saddle height is a good starting point – when riding with the ball of your foot, your knees will be slightly bent.
  • If the leg is still clearly bent: Raise the saddle. If the leg is hyperextended: Lower the saddle.

3. Test ride & observation

  • Ride for 10–20 minutes at a normal intensity level.
  • Watch out for the following issues: Hip swaying – saddle too high. Pain in the front of the knee – saddle too low (or cleats positioned incorrectly). Numb feet / cramps – check foot position, cleats, or saddle alignment.
  • Adjust in small increments (5 mm) until the movement feels natural.
