Setting the light height

How to stay safe and follow the rules

A properly adjusted headlight not only helps you see better, but also ensures that you are more visible to others without blinding anyone. Optimal lighting is crucial for your safety on the road, especially at dusk, in the dark, or in bad weather.

Why adjustment matters

Modern LED headlights are powerful. If they are set too high, they can blind oncoming drivers and riders. That's not only unpleasant, but also dangerous. If the headlight is aimed too low, you lose valuable visibility.

How to do it step by step

  1. Park your e-bike on level ground about five meters away from a wall
  2. Put your weight on the bike by sitting on the saddle. This is the only way to ensure that the light axis is aligned realistically
  3. Turn on the light and watch the light beam on the wall
  4. The brightest point of the light beam should not be higher than the height of your handlebars on the wall. A slight downward tilt of the light beam is ideal
  5. Adjust the angle of the headlight on the mount until the beam is properly aligned. Most mounts can be adjusted using a hex key
  6. Tighten the screws again once everything is in place

Technical background

The German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) stipulate that bicycle headlights must be adjusted so as not to blind others. Modern headlights use an asymmetrical beam pattern. The upper beam is limited so that only the ground in front of you and the area along the edge are well lit, but not oncoming traffic.

Tip

Check the light alignment regularly. Especially if you're often riding on uneven terrain. Vibrations or transport can cause the angle to change without you noticing.
