Maintaining the belt drive

This will keep your drive quiet, clean, and long-lasting.

A belt drive is particularly low-maintenance and durable – but even it needs a little care now and then to ensure it works reliably and continues to serve you well for years to come. Here's what you need to know.

Clean regularly

Regularly remove dirt, dust, and mud with water and a soft brush or a damp cloth. In most cases, plain water is perfectly sufficient. Do not use oil, grease, or harsh cleaning agents, as these can damage the belt.

Let it dry

After cleaning, you should dry the belt thoroughly or let it air dry. This prevents moisture from settling on the components, which could cause corrosion or other damage over time.

Do not use lubricants

The belt drive is designed for dry operation. Oils or greases would attract dirt and impair performance. Therefore never use grease, because it:

  • absorbs dirt,
  • glues the toothing together,
  • affects the belt's material properties,
  • and may shorten its lifespan in the long run.

Check the condition and tension of the belt

Check the belt regularly for cracks, damage, or improper alignment on the sprocket. The tension of the belt must also be checked regularly. The correct tension means that the belt is neither too loose nor too tight. This is the only way to ensure that the drive runs quietly and lasts a long time, without skipping or wearing out.

If you notice anything unusual or are unsure about something, have it inspected and, if necessary, adjusted by a Rose Bikes workshop or one of our service partners.
